Irene Bordoni sang, Harold Lloyd spoke - 25 January 1930

 

Movie Ad that appeared in The Vancouver Sun in January,
1930 promoting Irene Bordoni in Paris, featuring Cole

   The name Irene Bordoni prob­ably doesn't ring too many bells with the masses today. But in the 1920s and '30s, she was a big international star, a "lustrous, exotic" triple threat on the Broadway stage, the music world and in films.

   In 1928, Bordoni had the lead role in Cole Porter's first hit musi­cal on Broadway, Paris. One of the showstoppers was Bordoni singing one of Porter's signature tunes, Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love).

   First National turned Paris into a movie, which arrived at the Strand Theatre Jan. 25, 1930, amid a blitz of ads.

   "Better than a Follies Bergere Review," promised one ad. "Frenchier than a French Farce"

   "Sparkling Gowns and Sparkling Girls, read another.”A Rainbow of Melodies."

   "Let's go to Paris tonight," said a third. "This very night you can see the sights of the mad metropolis—'take in' a daring French revue — hear a famous Paris favourite — all in one glori­ous talking picture!"

   The gist of the movie was a young rich American (played by Jack Buchanan) who falls in love with an older Parisian actress (Bordoni), which horrifies his mom. Jack Robarts Sr. and Zasu Pitts co-starred in the film, which boasted "eight big songs" and "200 Fast Steppers."

   The "talking picture" used the Vitaphone process, where some-one would play phonograph records for the sound while somebody else played the film in a projector. Part of the movie was filmed in early Technicolor, but Paris is one of many lost films from the era — no print is known to exist.

   You can find a few Bordoni numbers on YouTube, though, including a rollicking version of another Porter song she made famous, Let's Misbehave. Bordoni had a marvellously fluid voice, and sang with a delightful French accent (she was born in 1885 in Corsica, which was part of France, and first came to the U.S. in 1907).

   The other big movie that week was comic legend Harold Lloyd's first talkie, Welcome Danger.

   "Now you HEAR the laugh that made the millions merry!" blared an ad. To drive home the point, the ad featured Lloyd's disem­bodied head surrounded by 17 different "ha-ha's"

   Fifty years ago, Gilligan and the Skipper took the S.S. Minnow out on a three-hour tour. The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed, but thanks to the courage of the fearless crew the Minnow wasn't lost — it became a pop-culture icon, the TV series Gilligan's Island.

   The show only lasted from 1964 to 1967, but reruns have been syndicated all over the world and it's been translated into 30 languages.

   Dawn Wells beat out 300 women to land the role of Mary Ann, a wholesome farm girl from Kansas, who was a foil to Ginger, the sexy movie star played by Tina Louise.

   Now 75, she's in Vancouver for an appearance at the Van­couver International Boat Show at BC Place. She is appearing alongside the S.S. Minnow, which is now owned by Quality Foods, the Vancouver Island grocery chain.

   The effervescent Wells never made much money out of the series — she thinks she was paid $700 per week when it was on and doesn't receive residual royalties.

   This is a far cry from the profit made by Sherwood Schwartz, who produced the series.

   "I understand Mr. Schwartz made $90 million on the reruns alone," she says.

   Still, it's nice to be a pop cul­ture icon.

   "I get fan letters all the time,' she says.” I can't go anywhere in the world (without someone say­ing) Mary Ann! Mary Ann!' "

This includes the Vancou­ver Sun newsroom, where assignment editor Dan Cassidy instructed me to tell Wells that, "I always thought Mary Ann was hotter than Ginger."

   She gets told this a lot.

   "As a matter of fact, I've got a T-shirt that's a ballot that says `Ginger or Mary Ann, the ulti­mate dilemma,' " she says.

   "But it is the question. You can go anywhere and say `Ginger or Mary Ann,' you don't have to say what show it is everybody gets it. And I always win.

   "Somebody said `How do you like it?' “she laughs.”I don't know — I get 91 per cent of the votes! Why wouldn't I like it?" Asked what male character Mary Ann would have thought was the hottest, Gilligan, the Skipper or the Professor, she replies "the Professor, no question."

   Sadly, Russell Johnson, the actor that played the Professor, recently died.

   "He was a wonderful human being," says Wells.

   "We were very good friends. The first year we were `and the rest' (in the theme song). So we would send cards to each other, 'Love, and the rest.'

   "He was a lovely, lovely man. He had the best sense of humour of anyone, he just kept us in stitches. You would think Jim Backus would be. Gilligan was all physical comedy, he wasn't witty. But Russell was very witty."

   Wells was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, not Kansas. "Mary Ann came from Winfield, Kansas, Dawn came from the gambling capital of the world, (which had) legal prosti­tution and instant divorce," she laughs.

   "Now, how did that happen? But I was raised with Mary Ann values. Reno was a very good city to grow up in."

   She was Miss Nevada in 1959, and studied pre-med at Ste­phens College in Missouri and the University of Washington in Seattle. But she wanted to give acting a whirl, and landed the Mary Ann role. Asked if she had auditioned as Ginger as well, she laughed.

   "No, as a matter of fact," she says. "Never even considered it, they didn't want me.

   "There were three replace­ments — in the original pilot there were three secretaries, or schoolteachers. CBS said `Let's rewrite,' so they made a movie star, professor and Mary Ann.

   "I tested with about 300 people in Los Angeles, and they were doing the same thing on the east coast. Ginger got cast first, and her agent negotiated for her to be in the position of billing right after the Howells. That's why the Professor and I were 'and the rest' the first year."

   The show was shot at various locales around Los Angeles. "We shot the footage, the still pictures, at the top of a mountain with pine trees,' she relates.

   "Which makes no sense. CBS Radford in Studio City is where the sound stage was, and we tried to film (the outdoor scenes) in Malibu, but it was too foggy. So they built a lagoon (for the island), about a mile from a freeway. About two years ago they filled it in for a parking lot."

Russell Johnson, Professor on 'Gilligan's Island,' Dies at 89

Russell Johnson, best known as Professor Roy Hinkley on Gilligan's Island, died Thursday of kidney failure. He was 89.

  "He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 a.m. today," his wife, Constance, told ABC News. "[He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home."

  Johnson portrayed the Professor in the classic comedy from 1964-67, appearing in 98 of the show's 99 episodes. Johnson was a busy but little-known character actor with credits that included This Island Earth and It Came From Outer Space when he was cast in the slapstick comedy about seven people marooned on an uncharted Pacific island.

  During its three-season run on CBS, critics lambasted the show. But after its cancellation, it found generations of new fans in reruns and reunion movies.

  In later years, Johnson remained "proud" of the role and its influence on viewers.

  "I think, what I love most at this point in time in the long life of Gilligan's Island is the positive, intelligent nature of longtime Gilligan aficionados," he wrote on his website. "It amazes me. I have received mail throughout the years from young viewers from all over the world, year after year, who were so influenced by the Professor's smarts that they became science buffs and are now real professors, doctors and scientists. It makes me proud."

  Johnson was the last surviving male star from the show.

  And Dawn Wells (who played fellow castaway Mary Ann), referring to her and Johnson's billing on the show, said, "and the other half of 'The Rest' is gone.

  "Russell was a true gentleman, a dear friend with fantastic wit and a wonderful actor. I am heartbroken and will miss him terribly."

  Wells, 75, noted that she will be attending a boat show next week in Vancouver that will feature the original S.S. Minnow from the series, now restored and used for charitable events. "I am hoping that we can do something to remember Russell at that time," she said.

  Johnson continued to work steadily through the 1990s, including in several Gilligan's Island TV movies along with appearances on such TV shows as Lassie, Newhart, Gunsmoke, Dynasty and Roseanne.

Dave Madden who played long-suffering band manager Reuben Kincaid passed away at 82.

  Canadian-born American actor Dave Madden, who played long-suffering band manager Reuben Kincaid on the ’70s sitcom “The Partridge Family,” has died. He was 82.

  Madden died of congestive heart failure and kidney failure on Thursday morning following a long illness.

  In addition to his run as Kincaid on “The Partridge Family” — a role he portrayed from 1970 to 1974 — Madden also had a steady role on the sitcom “Alice,” playing Mel’s Diner customer Earl Hicks.

  Madden also guest-starred on a number of series, including “Bewitched,” “Married With Children” and “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.”

Wizard of Oz munchkin Ruth Robinson Duccini Dies at 95.

  Ruth Robinson Duccini who played a Munchkin in the "The Wizard of Oz" has died at age 95 ... and now there's just one surviving little person from the flick.
  Ruth Robinson Duccini -- who stood 4 feet tall -- was the longest surviving female Munchkin ... she died of natural causes today at a hospice center in Las Vegas.
  Duccini received no screen credit for her role as a Munchkin townsperson -- she was one of 124 little people cast in the movie.
  Now ... only one Munchkin survives ... 93-year-old Jerry Maren -- who was a member of the famed Lollipop Guild.
