Abe Vigoda,Dies at 94

   Actor Abe Vigoda, best known for his roles as mobster Tessio in “The Godfather” and as Detective Sgt. Fish in TV’s “Barney Miller” and a spinoff series in which he starred, has died. He was 94 and died in New Jersey of natural causes, his daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs told the Associated Press.

   The tall character actor with the characteristically slouched shoulders and hangdog face became something of a pop culture figure due to repeated false reports of his demise, which became the subject of jokes. Reflecting his somewhat odd celebrity was the existence of a punk rock band named    Abe Vigoda; his recurring appearances in the late 2000s on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien”; and the existence of a website named Isabevigodadead.com, which for years consisted simply of a blank page with the word No.

   Vigoda made his feature debut in a bit part in Marcel Carne’s 1965 effort “Three Rooms in Manhattan,” but the stage actor was essentially unknown when he was cast in “The Godfather” as the ultimately disloyal Tessio in 1972, having landed the part in an open call. In the wake of “The Godfather,” in which Vigoda managed to make an impression despite the amount of high-powered acting talent in the film, the middle-aged actor became in demand. On the bigscreen, he appeared in the 1973 mob drama “The Don Is Dead” and 1974 crime drama “Newman’s Law,” and he reprised his role as Tessio in a flashback in “The Godfather: Part II.”

   Younger audiences might recognize him as the tribal chieftain in the Tom Hanks comedy “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990), which was a box office failure but developed a cult following.

   Meanwhile, after a few guest roles on TV series, Vigoda was cast as the aged, malady-laden and slow-moving cop Phil Fish in ABC police sitcom “Barney Miller,” which started its long run in 1974.    The character was so popular that the network launched a spinoff, simply titled “Fish,” in 1977. For a while, Vigoda appeared on both series. (The actor riffed on his cop role in Peter Falk feature comedy “The Cheap Detective” in 1978.) Vigoda also guested on series including “Hawaii Five-O,” “Kojak,” “The Bionic Woman,” “The Rockford Files” and “Eight Is Enough.”

   Born in New York, Abraham Vigoda made appearances in very early television — episodes of “Suspense” and “Studio One in Hollywood” in 1949 and an episode of “All Star Revue” in 1951 — but then disappeared from the medium until he began guesting on series starting with “Dark Shadows” in 1969.

   In between he appeared onstage in New York, including roles in “Richard III” in 1960 and 1961,    “The Cherry Orchard” in 1962-63, “A Darker Flower” in 1963 and “The Cat and the Canary” in 1965. He first hit Broadway with a role in a revival of “The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat” in 1967, followed by “The Man in the Glass Booth” in 1968-69 and “Inquest” in 1970.

   During the 1980s and ’90s, he appeared on shows including “The New Mike Hammer,” “Tales From the Darkside,” “MacGyver,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “Law and Order” and “Wings”; he also did stints on a pair of soaps, “As the World Turns” and “Santa Barbara.” In 1998 Vigoda played gangster Paul Castellano in the NBC telepic “Witness to the Mob.”

   The actor also enjoyed steady film work, including in “Joe Versus the Volcano.” He played the judge in the Pauly Shore comedy “Jury Duty” and appeared in small roles as grandpas and gangsters in a stream of low-profile pics during the 1990s and 2000s.

   In 1986-87 he starred on Broadway in a revival of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

   During the 2010 Super Bowl, Vigoda appeared with Betty White in a commercial for Snickers candy bars.

   Vigoda’s wife Beatrice died in 1992. He is survived by a daughter.

Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams) Dies at 74

   Dan Haggerty, best known for his role in “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams,” died from cancer early Friday morning in Burbank. He was 74.

   The actor’s manager Terry Bomar confirmed the news to Variety.

   His daughter, Megan, was using a crowdfunding site to raise money for his fight against “this bear known as cancer,” and had accumulated about $10,500 of the $100,000 goal.

   Haggerty played outdoorsman James Capen Grizzly” Adams, who befriends a bear he raises as a cub, in the 1974 surprise box office hit “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” and the TV series of the same name, which aired on NBC from 1977 to 1978. He later played Adams in another film (1981) and in a 1982 telefilm

   He also had small roles on other TV shows, including “Charlie’s Angels” in 1981 and “The Love Boat” in 1983.

   Haggerty was arrested in 1985 after selling cocaine to two undercover police officers. His career was further derailed following a 1993 motorcycle accident that almost claimed his life. He returned to his iconic role 18 operations and four years later in “Grizzly Mountain” and in a 2000 sequel.

   He most recently appeared in 2013 films “Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan” and “Dead in 5 Heartbeats.”

   Aside from Megan, Haggerty’s survivors include his other children, Dylan, Cody, Tracey and Don.

Alan Rickman Dies at 69

as Hans Gruber in Die Hard

   LONDON — British actor and director Alan Rickman, whose films included the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Die Hard” and “Truly Madly Deeply,” died of cancer in London on Thursday. He was 69.

   His Hollywood roles included Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies, which earned him a legion of new fans. Rickman brought the beloved book character to life, carrying him through the saga in which his role ended up being pivotal to Potter’s fate. He recently completed “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” in which he delivered the voice of the Blue Caterpillar.

   Rickman was little known in the United States before his fascinating turn as vaguely German villain Hans Gruber in John McTiernan’s “Die Hard”; Gruber’s motives at first seem relatively idealistic until Bruce Willis’ John McClane realizes that the takeover of Nakatomi Plaza is just a high-stakes robbery. As McClane single-handedly destroys the plot, Rickman’s Gruber watched in delicious disbelief. The extraordinary success of the film elevated the careers of everyone involved, including Rickman.

   As an actor, Rickman won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for TV biopic “Rasputin,” and a Bafta for “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” in which he played villain the Sheriff of Nottingham. He was Bafta-nominated for “Michael Collins,” “Sense and Sensibility” and “Truly Madly Deeply.”

   In his review of “Sense and Sensibility,” Roger Ebert wrote: “The next man to appear is Col. Brandon, played by that indispensable villain Alan Rickman, who is not a villain this time but seems to be, with his dark, brooding air and the speaking style of a sentimental hangman.”

   Anthony Minghella’s “Truly, Madly, Deeply” was a supernatural love story akin to “Ghost.” Rickman’s character has died, but he has never left the side of Juliet Stevenson’s character. The Washington Post said: “Rickman gives a wonderfully sleepy performance. The afterlife has left him tired and pale. His speech is slow, his lips are cold and he blames the government for just about everything.”

   Rickman won over many millennials as the cheating husband in “Love Actually” while also starring in those comedies “Galaxy Quest” and “Dogma.”

   He made his directorial debut with 1997’s “The Winter Guest,” which played in competition in Venice, and also directed 2014’s “A Little Chaos,” which ran at the Toronto Film Festival. On stage he directed the controversial play “My Name Is Rachel Corrie.”

   Rickman is survived by his wife, Rima Horton, whom he married last year. The couple had lived together since 1977.

Hit silent film, The Birth of a Nation arrives, inspiring rave reviews and protests

   It took almost a year for D.W. Griffith's silent movie classic The Birth of a Nation to reach Vancouver. But finally the Avenue Theatre on Main Street obtained it for a three-week run, starting Christmas Day, 1915, and running to Jan.15,1916.

   The hype was incredible. “Eighth Wonder of the World,” trumpeted the opening ad. “The Greatest Art Conquest Since the Beginning of Civilization!”

   The Avenue could run ads like this without shame, because Griffith had put together a startling, innovative film.

   At three hours long, Birth of a Nation was one of the first feature-length films - previously, most movies were about half an hour, or less. According to the History.com website, Griffith also came up

with many innovations that became standard film making techniques: “The close-up, the scenic long shot, the moving-camera shot, and the fade-in and fade-out.”

   The Vancouver World thought Griffith brought film into the realm of art.

   “It has been charged against the screen that it can never be a truly artistic medium, because it leaves nothing to the imagination,” said the World. “In order to overcome the absence of speech it must go into every minute detail, and exaggerate every slightest gesture beyond its true proportion.”

   “The criticism has been just as a criticism of fact against about nine-tenths of the film drama to date. But as a prediction it has been destroyed by Mr. D.W. Griffith, the master artist who directed 'The Birth of a Nation.'”

   Griffith's mastery of film technique failed to quiet critics who said the film was racist.

   Birth of a Nation was based on the play The Clansman by Thomas Dixon, which depicted the rise of the Ku Klux Klan after the U.S. Civil War. In fact, the movie itself was originally titled The Clansman.

   Today, many people think of the Ku Klux Klan as white thugs in white hoods who terrorized and 'killed black people' in the Deep South. But in Dixon's story, it was a group of courageous patriots who rose up to fight white carpetbaggers (businessmen) from the North and their black allies in the South who oppressed white men and raped their women.

   Defenders of Birth of a Nation argued it was a "historic portrayal" of southern life after the

Civil War.

   But critics like James W. Johnson of the “coloured” newspaper The New York Age thought it was “perverted history!”

   “The majority of the incidents portrayed in Dixon's play that relate to coloured people never happened,” Johnson wrote.

   “When did any Negro lieutenant-governor of a Southern state ever try by force to make a white woman marry him?

   When did Negro troops, led by Northern officers, ever loot and pillage the homes of the Southern whites and maltreat and murder the occupants of these homes?"

   The movie stirred up controversy wherever it went, and was banned in some states (Ohio, Minnesota) and cities (Tacoma, Memphis, Ottawa). In Vancouver, the Negro Christian Alliances sent a protest letter to council arguing the film was “offensive to all the coloured people throughout the earth,” and bred “race antagonism.”

   “Canada does not desire to see her citizens lynched, shot and burned by low-browed, half-witted individuals defying all law and order,” said the protest letter, which was printed in the World.

   “Yet this shameful outrage will become a matter of history in Canadian' national life if the picture-play called The Birth of a Nation is allowed to be exhibited throughout Britain's most promising overseas dominion.”

   But the movie went ahead as scheduled. After the initial controversy, the World chose to focus on the epic elements of the film.

   “Five thousand scenes, 18,000 characters, 3,000 horses, approximate cost of production S500,000,” the World noted. "Cities built up, then destroyed by fire. The biggest battle of the Civil War reenacted. Ford's Theatre, Washington, reproduced to the smallest detail for the Lincoln tragedy. A series of wild 'Klu-Klux' rides that commandeered a county for a day and cost $10,000. Wonderful artillery duels in which real shells -- costing $80 a Piece -- were€ used. Miles of trenches, thousands of fighters --'War as it actually is.'”

   The latter statement seems in poor taste, given that men were being slaughtered at the time.

   During the First World War. Still, The Birth of a Nation was a huge hit, and cemented Griffith's reputation as a movie legend.
